About the Zako ATS Throttle Body Repair Kits

Why do I need this tool?

Throttle bodies and carbs wear around the shaft causing vacuum leaks which disrupt the mixture.  Symptoms of this include unstable or poor idle, hesitation and sticking shafts or throttle plates.

Just "throwing a kit in" won't do it for carbs or TBI's with more than 50,000 miles (80,000 km).  Even if you fix everything else, the uncompensated air being sucked in around the shaft will affect the mixture throughout the operating range. 

A classic example is an '89 Chevy Suburban we worked on recently.  It had 250,000 km on the odometer, and ran great - except for the idle going up and down continually.  The owner had changed out the injectors, the IAC (Idle Air Control), the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and the fuel pressure regulator and gaskets.  Ran even better after that - but still a lousy idle! That's when we took out the throttle shaft and put in bronze bushings using the ZA-05 Throttle Shaft Repair Kit.

Half an hour later, the customer had a perfect-idling truck, ready for more than another 250,000 km!

What is the Zako ATS Throttle Body Tool?

It's a precision crafted specialty tool, consisting of a pilot shaft and fluted, fully hardened cutting blades.  The tool is used in a hand held variable speed drill (not included).  The pilot part slides in to the throttle body, perfectly aligning the cutting blades for a prefect reaming operation every time.

How is the tool used?

Full instructions are included with each Throttle Shaft Repair Kit.  In summary, the steps are:

1. Disassemble and clean the carburetor or throttle body.  Remove the throttle shaft.
2. Lubricate the tool and throttle body using WD-40 or equivalent light oil. Insert the chuck end of the tool into a hand-held drill and tighten the chuck.
3. Insert the pilot end into the the throttle shaft hole in the carburetor or throttle body.
4. With slight pressure and turning at moderate speed ream out the hole until the built-in stop on the tool is reached.
5. Remove the tool.
6. Drive the bushing in using a hex-head bolt as driver (see Full Instructions).
7. Reassemble the throttle body or carburetor.

What is included in the kit?

Each kit includes the precision four flute reamer with depth stop and pilot., ten sintered-bronze oil-impregnated bushings (enough for five jobs) and full instructions.  In addition, the ZA-01 5/16" kit includes throttle plate screws for use with Quadrajet carburetors.  The tool and accessories come in a sturdy package which serves as a storage container. How many uses is the tool good for?

That depends on how it's used.  The Carburetor Doctor has two of each of the ZA-01 and ZA-05 tools and has done literally hundreds of carbs with them.  However, it is a hardened cutting instrument, so if you drop it, or apply excessive bending stress it could break, like any other cutting tool.  With thorough lubrication and cleaning the tool will pay for itself over and over again.

Is there a warranty?

We will gladly refund the purchase price of an unused Throttle Shaft Repair Kit, upon its return to us, if you don't agree it's the finest tool of its kind available anywhere.   Once used, precision cutting tools like this can't be warranted against breakage or other damage, since the use of the tool is out of our control.  Warranty details...  

What types of carburetors or throttle bodies can I repair?

The ZA-01 kit can repair most carburetors with 5/16" shafts.  These include:
